Cape Verde helps Gambia fight malaria – African Markets

The Gambia would like to know Cape Verde’s experience in the elimination of malaria, since it is only in the pre-elimination phase of this disease, which mainly affects African countries.

The Gambia visit

The Minister of Health, Arlindo do Rosário, received his Gambian counterpart, Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, who is in Cape Verde on an official visit to, among other things, learn about the experience of the Cape Verdean health authorities in terms of malaria elimination strategies .

In this regard, it should be noted that Cape Verde is in the process of eliminating the disease with internationally recognized advances, with four years without registration of indigenous cases.

The Gambia, for its part, is in the pre-elimination phase of this disease which mainly affects African countries and the visit of the Gambian delegation led by Minister Ahmadou Lamin Samateh also aims to learn about the experience of this archipelago in terms of concerns the vaccination campaign against COVID 19, which also positions the country as a success story.

Another objective advocated by The Gambia is to understand the functioning of the Cape Verdean social security system.

After a tete-a-tete, held at the Government Palace, the two ministers spoke with the press.

Arlindo do Rosário said that it was a great satisfaction to receive his counterpart from Gambia and his delegation in Cape Verde, stressing that the country, as a small island state, with several challenges still to overcome, has made a journey exemplary, especially in the health sector. with significant gains in consistent and sustained improvement in key health indicators.

And as an example, he showed that at the time of independence, the infant mortality rate in Cape Verde was around 127/1000 and, at present, said the minister, according to the data from 2021, this rate is around 10.5/1000, argued Arlindo do Rosário.

The Minister of The Gambia also took the floor to praise this archipelago in the field of health, specifying that:

“Cape Verde is on the right track because of the development it has experienced in various sectors, but especially in the health sector, in which it has been referenced in international forums”.

“Where it was discussed, especially on the issue of eliminating malaria and the good experience in the fight against the covid-19 pandemic”.

Ahmadou Lamin Samateh arrived in Cape Verde, Wednesday, August 3, 2022, for a State visit that ended today, August 6, 2022, where he carried out an intense program of visits that included, in addition to official meetings with the Cape Verdean health authorities, visits to various health structures on the island of Santiago and other institutions such as INPS, INPHARMA and EMPROFAC.

Once again, this proves that Cape Verde is on the right track and not only because of the great development it has experienced in the health sector, but also in several other sectors.

Gambia’s request for aid to this “small country” of the PALOPs clearly indicates that Cape Verde is beginning to be recognized internationally for the great work of development it has accomplished after independence.

Other PALOP countries should learn from Cape Verde’s experience and look to the future.
